Landscape

In the course of centuries the incredible number of canals and streams has favoured the development of mills. Built in different epochs to mill cereals, operated by hydraulic energy they are sometimes inside the farms (as in the farms del Longo and della Croce) or isolated in the country (such as Mora Bassa, Mora Alta, della Scala) and sometimes even in the residential areas (such as Porta Nuova, and Resega). They are all very ancient and some of them are quoted in Leonardo da Vinci's manuscripts, as Della Scala and Mora Alta. Nearly all of them were working till 1950 but now they are in a bad state of preservation and unfortunately are running the risk of destruction. Symbols of a "preindustrial" culture, thanks to the hydraulic power they utilized, in the 19th century the mills often contributed to the industrial development turning into spinning mills or becoming factories for manufactured goods (see the Molino di Porta Milano and del Conte).
